AI: The Impact on Design, Copywriting and SEO.

AI generated image.

The world of content marketing is rapidly evolving because of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) To some it’s scary and to others, well, it’s just a playground. Many individuals have concerns around AI, but don’t we all? When we say AI what do we actually mean? What does it mean when I say I created the image to the left with AI? What does it mean for copywriting and SEO? In this blog we will discuss what AI is and how it’s affecting the landscape of creative fields. We will also talk about what the future holds and legitimate concerns around job displacement.

What is AI?

According to Merriam Webster Artificial Intelligence is “software designed to imitate aspects of intelligent human behavior.” Ever use Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa? Yup those are AI. It’s used all across the world in different industries and in different ways. For today we are going to stick to discussing AI in the creative field only.

For the design world, it creates images and graphics. Take the image to the left as an example. I created this image using Midjourney with a couple of prompts and some small color corrections in photoshop. Honestly it’s mind blowing at how realistic this image looks. When it comes to copy, the sky’s the limit. You can talk to chat GPT to help you with any type of writing. For example, you could ask it to write this blog for you. Although it could do that, it wouldn’t be advantageous to you or your website as google search is trying to combat fake or AI generated content. You could use ChatGPT to help you write that email or even create a schedule for you as long as you know how to put in the correct prompts. As for SEO, it can populate all of that content for you. While this is a major help again, it will hurt you in the long run as google is trying to promote human written information.

AI in Design

Now that we know what AI is and can do, let’s talk a little bit about how AI can create efficiencies in workflow and some of the current limitations that it has. I personally have found AI to be an extremely helpful tool. It helps me in the brainstorming process as soon as I start. I will open ChatGPT, tell it what I’m looking for and begin spitballing ideas back and forth with. If I need research and information, I ask it as well. I would always be sure to check online to verify the information because let’s be honest. AI isn’t close to being perfected. In this case AI helps me bridge the gap between my ideas and the research I need to do behind the product. When it comes to actually designing something specific, ChatGPT isn’t there with its DALL-E image creator. Everything it creates looks very fake or animated no matter how good the prompting is. Again, it is a great starting point to generate ideas!

When it comes time for me to create the content for clients, I have been able to save myself hours in the creation phase. It has helped level the playing field with much better traditional designers. An AI I’m currently using for content creation is Midjourney. I’ve only been using it for a couple of weeks now but I will say I am blown away at the quality it’s producing. I’ve created various logos with it, pictures with people, and even food. It’s so realistic I can’t even tell the difference myself. Now on occasion it still messes up and you will get a weird deformed hand or missing elements. Not to worry, when that happens it’s not as bad as some of the deformations you see in the new TV show Fallout.

At the end of the day, these AI’s help me with the much more boring tasks, checklists, scheduling, and let me get back to the creative aspect. Where AI currently falls short is in the creation of your final product. As an example, when making a logo, the AI can generate an image close to what you want. You will still need to know how to use tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to get the final product for your clients. There is no getting around this just yet. Don’t worry designers, you are still needed.

AI in Copywriting

AI has revolutionized the landscape of copywriting, offering unparalleled efficiency and creativity. Through natural language processing algorithms, AI can analyze vast amounts of data to discern trends and language patterns, enabling marketers to craft highly targeted and engaging content. From generating product descriptions to optimizing ad copy, AI-driven tools can streamline the copywriting process, freeing up valuable time for marketers to focus on strategy and innovation. Moreover, AI-powered language models can generate compelling narratives and persuasive messaging, leveraging deep learning techniques to mimic human-like writing styles. By harnessing the power of AI, businesses can enhance their copywriting efforts, driving greater engagement and ultimately achieving their marketing objectives more effectively.

Now if you didn’t catch it, that last paragraph was all AI. It sounds great and is accurate, but it loses my style of written content. The other major downside is google search engine is combating AI written content. There are free testers out there. You can copy and paste text into a box and it will determine if the writing was AI or not.

When I started writing this blog I was trying to debate on what I should and shouldn’t cover. It was
